The Origin Story

Rooted in History
Since 1860

More than 160 years of story — from Gold Rush pioneers to Hollywood's Golden Age — written into the land itself.

"There's no way this is Southern California."
— what guests say the moment they arrive
  1. 1860s

    The Gold Rush Beginning

The history of Lockwood's Ranch dates back to the 1860s, when Bernard Lockwood and his wife traveled west from New York during the height of America's Gold Rush in search of fortune and opportunity. Mr. Lockwood became one of the early miners in the region, living in a humble one-room miner's cabin while working the surrounding mountains and creeks for gold and silver. Remarkably, that original cabin still stands today — and is now available as a unique Airbnb stay, letting guests sleep inside a true piece of California frontier history.

  2. 1930s

    Hollywood's Golden Age

In the 1930s, famed screenwriter and novelist Dalton Trumbo purchased the ranch, becoming one of Hollywood's highest-paid and most influential writers of the era. His legendary credits include Spartacus (4 Academy Awards), Roman Holiday (3 Academy Awards), Exodus, and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo — films that helped define Hollywood's Golden Age and were shaped, in part, on this very land.

  3. Mid-Century

    A Mountain Oasis Takes Shape

As the property continued to develop through the generations, the family constructed a stunning three-acre private lake, transforming the ranch into an extraordinary mountain oasis ideal for recreation, retreats, entertainment, and filmmaking. The ranch also features a rare full-sized horse racing track — another unique feature that adds to the property's historic charm and Western character.

  4. Today

    A Cinematic Sanctuary

Wrapped by the Los Padres National Forest on three sides, Lockwood's Ranch has become a sought-after destination for television productions, movies, commercials, photography campaigns, music videos, weddings, corporate retreats, and private celebrity events. Authentic history. Hollywood legacy. Extreme privacy. Untouched wilderness — an atmosphere that simply cannot be replicated.
